Chapter Nine

Izzy

That’s it then. There’s no way for me to get out of the building if they block those exits. If I rush for the stairs, even if they don’t catch me, I’ll never get down fast enough to get out of the building. The noose isn’t choking tight yet, but but I can feel the knot closing around my neck.

There seems to be more of them now. Maybe some of the people they help join the cause. I wonder, just for a moment, if they would accept me into their fold. If I joined them now after running for so long would there be a place for me among their number?

It’s a dangerous way to think. Not just because I’m sure I’m not one of them, but because joining them would require me to change. What would it be like to chase others through the hall with a bloody wound on my forehead and a mask of blood drying around my eyes? I don’t think I can be that kind of a person.

And I’m not going to find out. I dig my phone out of my pocket. It still has about a quarter of its charge. But no bars.

I need to find somewhere else to hide. Somewhere I might be able to find some cell reception and maybe get a call out to the authorities. Sooner or later, someone is going to answer 911. They have to.

I’m deep in the center of the building now. I’ll never get a signal here. I need to get closer to the outside of the building, maybe near one of the windows in an apartment. I try not to think of the smells and the noises I heard coming from those rooms. I’ll deal with whatever I find there, but I need to find a cell signal first.

My knees pop as I stand up from my hiding place and stretch my legs. The sound makes me freeze for long seconds. I don’t hear anyone coming; no one barks out a warning, so they must not have heard me.

I hope. I hug the Coke machine and lean my head out into the hall. I don’t see anyone coming in either direction, but that doesn’t tell me much. The hallways here are short, and there are corners every few yards. Someone could pop into my path at any second. I need to plan my moves, I need to know where I’m going and where I can hide when I get there.

The lights are out in the hall to my left, and there’s a convenient shadow at the corner there. I dart out and tuck myself into the little pocket of gloom. From here, I can see into the next hall where the lights are still on. There’s broken glass on the floor there, so I’ll have to be careful. But that also means that I’ll be able to hear someone coming before they can see me. I count to ten, and when I don’t hear anyone approaching, I move.
